About Our Prints

Giclee Prints – all the prints on this site are produced using the Giclee (pronounced gee – clay) printing process. This is a relatively new digital technique whereby a sophisticated printer sprays on small dots of ink, row by row in a single pass. For high quality fine art printing Giclee is gradually replacing the traditional lithograph printing process: whereby one colour at a time is added to specially coated paper using metal printing plates. The Giclee process is more expensive in terms of the papers, inks and the time taken to produce an individual print. However the quality is much higher and the artist has much more control over the final result ensuring the prints are as close to the original artwork as is possible.

Giclee Canvas Prints - another advantage of the Giclee method is that it can be equally effective when using canvas as the printing medium, a good Giclee canvas can be difficult to distinguish from an original painting. A number of our prints have a canvas option.

Decalled Edge – this technique involves the print being torn by hand around its outer edge as opposed to the sharp finish that would normally be created by a steel cutter. This style of presentation recreates the traditional feel of hand-drawn rag papers and is becoming increasingly popular.

The image on the right is of the corner of a print and shows the inner part of a French Mount (the complete mount is much wider than is illustrated), a decalled edge and also how the artist has signed and numbered the limited edition print.

French Mount 2

French Mount – most of our prints come with a French mount option. This type of presentation combines a normal outer mount with an inner mount that is much thicker, usually about 7-8 mm. The inner mount also has a nicely beveled edge giving the finished piece a much more luxurious feel. A third piece of mount board is used as backing; finally it is covered with a clear wrap. The print is ready for final framing but could just as easily be given as a gift as it is. The mount board has a light cream finish that should fit with most decors. The mount will add around 8 inches in each dimension to the image sizes given throughout the site e.g. a print that has an image size of 20 x 24 inches will actually be around 28 x 32 when the mount is included. High quality, acid free materials are used throughout. If you would like a different kind of presentation then it is possible to buy most prints unmounted so that you can choose your own finish at your local framers.

Limited Editions – all of our prints are limited editions. The number given is the total number that will be produced of that image. If there are options such as different sizes or canvas then there is not a separate edition for each. This is another advantage of the Giclee process; because the prints are created individually it allows collectors to choose their preferred option whilst keeping the overall edition size low and therefore exclusive.

Framed Giclee Canvas Prints – we have both loose and framed options for our canvas prints. There are two ways to frame canvases; the traditional method, is to stretch and pin the canvas over a frame made of special stretcher bars. An alternative that is becoming increasingly popular is to first mount the canvas onto a suitable stiff board before adding the frame and backing; both give excellent results. The method chosen will depending on how the publisher has chosen to present the print; sometimes they are supplied loose with stretcher bars for us to assemble, sometimes they are already bonded to board.

Our frames are created using a traditional fabric covered inner slip and a high quality wood frame with a gold or silver finish, all carefully chosen to complement the artwork.
